Heidi Watterson's letter to the editor advocating the decriminalization of cannabis highlights the important medicinal benefits of cannabis use. As a physician who treats people with HIV/AIDS, I can attest to the therapeutic effects of marijuana products in both pill form (Marinol) and/or smoked form in curbing nausea and stimulating appetite. Criminalization of marijuana use (especially medicinal use) has done nothing but create a black market in the drug which lures organized crime syndicates to try and reap the high profits made possible by the counterproductive "War on Drugs".
