JACKSON TWP — Karyn Brooks had seen enough.

The Seneca Valley girls lacrosse coach had watched her team's 6-0 lead get cut to 8-6 with 11:39 left in Thursday's game against Butler.

Brooks called a timeout to help her players regroup.

"I told them that if they wanted to end the season with an undefeated section record, they had to start playing with heart. Then, they came out on fire," she said.

SV's Lindsay Flavion scored just 11 seconds following the timeout and the Raiders went on to claim a 9-7 victory at NexTier Stadium.

Seneca Valley finishes the regular season with an overall mark of 15-2 and earned its second consecutive WPIAL Section 1 championship with a perfect 10-0 record.

Butler (6-11) entered the second half trailing the hosts 7-2, but received goals from Becca Crissman and Sara Schweiger (2) before Elizabeth Small's third goal of the game with 11:39 left cut SV's edge to two goals and prompted Brooks to call the timeout.

"When it got to be 6-0, I put in a lot of players who don't have much varsity experience," said Brooks. "I wanted to get them some experience with the playoffs coming up, just in case.

"Then in the second half, when they (Butler) came back, I put the starters back in."

Butler's resurgence in the second half almost made up for its lackluster play in the first 25 minutes.

Seneca Valley's Nicole Roche opened the scoring with a goal 4:19 into the game.

Andrea St. Clair and Natalie Kalnas both scored twice and Berta Miller added another score for the Raiders' sixth goal.

The Golden Tornado finally got on the board when Small beat SV goalie Katie Sterling with 3:32 left in the half.

Small added another score just before halftime, but only after Amy Cross had done the same for SV.

"We just didn't play well in the first half," said Butler coach Annie Succop. "But the kids played their hearts out in the second half."

Small's fourth goal for Butler, which came with just 1:31 remaining in the game, proved to be the final score of the senior's career. She ended the night with four goals and two assists.

"She has really stepped up her play in the second half of the season," Succop said of Small. "We knew we could get the ball to her and she would take care of it. We're really going to miss her next season."

Shannon Quail tallied one goal for the Raiders, with 15:35 left in the game that gave the Raiders an 8-4 lead.

Sterling tallied eight saves in net for SV, while Julie Holt stopped 16 shots for the Tornado.

Seneca Valley will begin the WPIAL playoffs next Thursday against an opponent to be determined.

The Raiders' two losses this year came against Quaker Valley and Seton LaSalle.

"When our starters were in there tonight, they played hard," said Brooks. "I'm happy with their performance."
