Eagle County playoffs set to begin MondayThe Eagle County baseball playoffs are set.Mars II and Mars received the top two seeds and will receive a bye.Cranberry, the No. 3 seed, will host the sixth-seeded Mars Sliders Monday to begin the best-of-three first round.Pine-Richland, the No. 4 seed will host Zelienople, also Monday.Both games will begin at 6:15 p.m.Cranberry is coming off a 12-1 win over the Mars Sliders Thursday.Paul Shever got the win, Vince Ruggieri tripled and singled, Tanner Master tripled and Clayton Bouchard, Reed Tomlinson and Joel Shaffer each had two hits for Cranberry.
Giants acquire infielder Nunez from TwinsSAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Giants acquired All-Star infielder Eduardo Nunez from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night in exchange for a minor league pitcher.Nunez was batting .300 with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs this season for the Twins and was leading the American League with 26 steals at the time of the trade.San Francisco sent minor league pitcher Adalberto Mejia to the Twins.
Venus Williams ousted from Rogers CupMONTREAL — Sixth-seeded Venus Williams tumbled out of the Rogers Cup in the third round Thursday night, falling 6-1, 6-7 (2), 6-3 to 10th-seeded Madison Keys in an all-American match.Playing her last tournament match before the Rio Olympics, the 36-year-old Williams lost seven straight games before holding serve in the third game of the second set. After Williams rallied to tie the match, Keys found her serve in the third set, punctuating the win with an ace on match point.The 21-year-old Keys won the Wimbledon tuneup event in Birmingham, England, this year for her second WTA Tour title. She’ll face 16th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the quarterfinals.Williams beat Barbora Strycova on Wednesday in her first match since losing to Britain’s Johanna Konta on Sunday in the Bank of the West Classic final.
