PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh is No. 1 again.

This time in The Economist magazine's ranking of the most livable city in the United States.

The British magazine's ranking comes weeks after President Barack Obama chose Pittsburgh to host the G-20 summit in September, calling it a symbol of economic recovery.

The magazine considers stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

In 2007, the 25th anniversary edition of Rand McNally's "Places Rated Almanac" also ranked Pittsburgh most livable.

Pittsburgh's economy was decimated when the U.S. steel industry collapsed 30 years ago. It has been struggling to recover ever since.

A $5 million facelift of Pittsburgh's oldest downtown public square will transform it from a has-been gathering place to an up-and-coming European piazza.Officials say the renovation will begin Aug. 1.Market Square will be leveled, bus and car traffic will be diverted to make the area more pedestrian friendly and outdoor seating will dot the area surrounded by small shops and restaurants.Mayor Luke Ravenstahl's spokeswoman Joanna Doven says the renovation is part of the city's "third renaissance."

Pittsburgh council members say they will not back a 300-page plan aimed at making the city fiscally viable.Several City Council members say they do not support the tax hikes, stunted police wages and staffing cuts proposed to make the city fiscally successful.
