Center budget has no tax hike

Final approval set next month

CENTER TWP — The township budget is expected to remain about the same in 2015.

The supervisors distributed the proposed budget at their meeting Wednesday night. It is set at about $1.7 million, the same as the past three years.

The general fund real estate tax will remain at 2.75 mills for next year.

The last increase in taxes was 2012.

Center earns about $229,000 each year in real estate taxes, as well as an additional $110,000 in real estate transfer taxes, which are half a percent on the sale of property.

The township expects to receive $1.05 million in earned income taxes next year. Center and the Butler School District evenly split the 1 percent tax on gross wages.

Center collects a $52 per person local service tax for each person employed in the township, which adds about $50,000 to the budget.

The school district receives $5 of that $52 tax and emergency services receive $11.75. Employees earning less than $12,000 annually are exempt from the tax.

The .05 mill mercantile tax on gross sales contribute about $108,000 to the budget, while the .05 mills business privilege tax will bring in about $43,000.

Expenditures also remained about the same.

The largest difference comes in snow and ice removal. Salt prices rose from about $208,000 in 2014 to a projected cost of $260,000 next year.

The township pays $68 per ton for salt.

The budget will need to be approved at the Dec. 10 meeting.
