KC rolls up 337 rushing yards to rout Union

KARNS CITY - It's hard to figure which one struck quicker: the lightning or the Karns City offense.

Two lightning delays and a few rainstorms couldn't slow the Gremlins offense, which scored six first half touchdowns en route to a 63-7 Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference football victory over Union Friday.

Seven different Gremlins scored touchdowns, led by Josh Fiscus, who rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns.

Lightning delayed the start of the game for 26 minutes before the Gremlins recovered a Union fumble on the first play of the game and scored on a Fiscus 2-yard run four plays later.

Two Steve Black touchdowns passes - a 14-yarder to David Black and a 17-yarder to Justin Switzer - helped stake the Gremlins (5-4, 4-3) to a 21-0 advantage with 1:09 left in the first quarter.

The Gremlins scored on all six of their first-half possessions and nine of 10 for the game.

"This game was good for our young kids and good for the future," said Karns City coach Ed Conto. "We want to try and finish strong.

"I thought all of our backs did well. I told Josh he'd play probably for the first half, so if he touches the ball, he'll get his yards," Conto added.

"I wasn't pleased at all," said Union coach Tom Kidder. "We tried some things that we weren't very successful in.

"I can see giving up scores to their first team, but we can't make mistakes like we did. To compete against Karns City, you can't do that," Kidder added.

After the first play of the second quarter, another lightning strike caused a 28-minute delay, but the Gremlins finished the period with three more touchdowns - two by Fiscus wrapped around one by Wayne Harris - for a 42-0 halftime advantage.

The Gremlins outgained the Golden Knights 260-79 in the first half with all of Union's yards coming on the ground.

In the second half, the Gremlins scored on their seventh consecutive possession when Steve Black scored on an 8-yard run.

Union rebounded with a 10-play drive that took it to the Karns City 27, but a fumble - the Knights' fourth lost fumble on the night - gave the ball back to the Gremlins.

However, the Knights (0-9, 0-7) got the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter when Nate Carmichael intercepted a tipped pass from backup quarterback Matt Endlish and raced 70 yards for Union's lone score.

The Gremlins closed out the scoring when Brett Green and Mitch Deitz scored on 21- and 11-yard runs, respectively.

The Gremlins rushed for 348 yards on 33 carries as 10 different players ran the ball.

Union received 96 of its 116 rushing yards from Colton Davis.

"We wanted to see Chad Carmichael behind the line to look for someone to go with Colton," said Kidder. "If we learned anything (Friday), it's that (Davis) needs to carry the ball. We can't be too deceptive about that. And we have to do some better blocking."

The Gremlins will have two weeks to prepare for its District 9 Class AA playoff game against host Redbank Valley. Kickoff is tentatively set for 7 p.m. Nov. 13.

The Bulldogs beat Karns City 51-7 Week 4.

"We want another shot at Redbank Valley," said Conto. "It was probably our worst game of the year. We had six turnovers and didn't play well."

Notes:

David Black set the school's single-season receiving yards record. He needed 19 yards and finished the game with 41 yards. He now has 712 yards on 48 receptions and nine touchdowns. … Union had only 18 players in uniform.
