6 turnovers doom Gremlins

SIDMAN — On the first play of the game Friday night, Karns City quarterback Matt Endlish found wide receiver Cameron Turner for a 55-yard completion.

Three plays later, Endlish scored on a 1-yard keeper, giving the Gremlins a 7-0 lead over Forest Hills.

It was all downhill from there.

Forest Hills, a District 6 school located 10 miles outside of Johnstown, scored the next 44 points on its way to a 44-21 win at G.H. Miller Field.

"We made a lot of mistakes," Karns City coach Ed Conto said. "We weren't playing our game well."

The Gremlins (9-1) turned the ball over six times compared to the Rangers' lone turnover. Forest Hills capitalized and converted four of those miscues into 29 points.

"Any time you play in a big game, the team that has the fewest mistakes usually wins," Forest Hills coach Don Bailey said. "The team that turns (the ball) over, they usually lose. ..."

The way the Rangers (8-2) played, Karns City didn't need to help them. Quarterback Travis Rearick, who came in averaging 173.6 passing yards a game, lit up the Gremlins secondary to the tune of 234 yards. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound senior tossed four touchdown passes and added two two-point conversion tosses.

"He's been doing that all year," Bailey said. "He's thrown for close to 2,000 yards this year, and he had a good game tonight."

Rearick got the Rangers going with a 34-yard touchdown pass to Josh Shope with 2:17 left in the first quarter. Rearick found Ross Carpenter for the two-point conversion, and the Rangers were off and running.

In the second quarter, tailback Jared Kostan scored on runs of 6 and 9 yards before Rearick found Shope from 18 yards out, giving Forest Hills a 30-7 halftime lead.

"On a lot of those plays, we had nine or 10 guys doing a good job," Conto said. "And on offense we moved the ball. We just couldn't do it consistently."

That was due to turnovers.

"(Forest Hills) gave us the same looks every time," Endlish said. "We just didn't make the plays to win. We had our chances."

The Gremlins, who have next week off before opening the District 9 Class AA playoffs, went 2-for-4 in the red zone with a fumble and a missed field goal.

"We're young," Conto said. "Next year, they come up to our place, so we'll get another shot at them."

Forest Hills hosts Marion Center on Friday in the District 6 Class AA quarterfinals.
