Cypher 107th birthday
Concordia at Cabot personal care resident Helen Denny Cypher celebrates her 107th birthday Thursday. Currently she is the oldest resident in personal care throughout the Concordia system.
The family celebrated with her Sunday.
Born in Winfield Township, the youngest of five children, she married Phillip E. Cypher on June 6, 1938, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cabot where she is currently the oldest member.
Married for 42 years until he passed away in 1980, the couple had a son, Phillip D. Cypher, who resides in nearby Buffalo Township, and a daughter, Sandra Grau, living in Midlothian, Va.
Helen has six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
After she graduated from Slippery Rock Normal School on May 29, 1933, with a degree in public education, Helen taught grades one through eight in a one-room school house.
She continued to teach for the South Butler County School District until she retired in 1977.
Helen said she loved teaching and often her former students still visit her.
Cypher has lived on Marwood Road in the red brick house near Freehling Lumber since 1940.
She enjoyed cooking and baking — her cinnamon rolls were famous as she sent them to her friends all over the country, and members of the local American Legion remember her delicious chicken recipe.
