North Country honored

North Country Brewing in Slippery Rock has been honored by the Bartramian Audubon Society for sustainable business practices.

The society awarded North Country its 2016 Sustainable Conservation by a Business honor, citing the brewery’s on-site recycling program and use of locally-grown ingredients at its restaurant as keystone best-practices.

The brewery’s owners, Bob and Jodi McCafferty, were also honored for their individual contributions to sustainable conservation, the society said.

The McCaffertys have established a scholarship fund for students involved in Slippery Rock University’s Sustainable Enterprise Accelerator, which provides guidance and learning experience for business startups with a focus on combining environmental consciousness and ethical economic policy.

The McCaffertys have also been a driving force behind Slippery Rock’s annual community cleanup day, “Polish the Rock,” and brewery’s annual brewfest has raised thousands of dollars for community development.

The awards ceremony was held at Jennings Environmental Education Center. The society is the local chapter of the National Audubon Society serving Butler, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties.
