EDCO Park benefits from programs

Summer events get big crowds

EVANS CITY — When the weather was good, the new summer programs at EDCO Park proved successful at bringing the community together and raising a little money for the park and pool.

Cindy Caldwell, an EDCO Park Authority board member and manager at the swimming pool, said activities were scheduled for Wednesdays and Fridays at the park and pool.

She said the authority raised more than $1,000 by holding these events.

However, she said many of the Wild Wednesday events were hurt by bad weather. Wild Wednesdays featured the pool’s lifeguards teaching residents a skill or engaging in fun activities with youngsters.

Dance club, kayaking, pool games, karate, fly tying and dive tricks were some of the Wild Wednesday themes. The program ran from June 19 to Aug. 20.

She said the Princess Party hosted on July 16 by lifeguard Madison Lehman drew the most attendees. She said more than a dozen girls had their hair and nails done, and noshed on tea sandwiches and cookies, all while wearing a tiara.

“The girls had such a great time. They wanted another one,” Caldwell said.

She said attendance at the Wild Wednesday events suffered when wet or cool weather set in.

“Three or four nights were impacted by the weather, and that’s a lot of Wednesdays,” Caldwell said.

She said the Neighborhood Night program each Friday night in June and two Friday nights in both July and August, featured swimming, movies in the park and at the pool, music and campfires.

To add a little more fun, a campfire or concession stand snack coordinated with each week’s theme, Caldwell said.

For Family Float Night, ice cream floats were available at the concession stand. A dinner special also was available during Neighborhood Nights.

One Neighborhood Night in June, Caldwell said, drew 70 people.

“They all did really well,” Caldwell said. “There was so much to do.”

She said the movies also were popular, and many people enjoyed an event at the pool in which all swimmers were given glow sticks.

“That was neat, seeing all those glow sticks in the pool floating around,” Caldwell said.

She said two groups of Cub Scouts also gave presentations on their pursuit of the Argonaut badge.

The campfire treats at the fire ring in the park also were popular on Neighborhood Nights, Caldwell said.

“The s’mores were a great hit,” she said.

The authority plans to continue both Wild Wednesdays and Neighborhood Nights next summer, Caldwell said.

“We will probably do Neighborhood Nights on all Friday nights,” she said.
