Food pantry users allotted more bags on buses

The Butler Transit Authority voted Tuesday to amend its bag policy, which limits riders to carrying only two bags of limited size on a bus.

The amendment allows riders to transport more bags when they are coming from Butler County Community College's Pioneer Pantry.

The authority board of directors said the bag policy was enacted because people were bringing suitcases and trash bags on buses, which could be safety liabilities and could also occupy too many bus seats.

The board of directors said the amendment was a request made by BC3. If the policy is abused or comes under fire, the board of directors intend to review and possibly amend it once more.

The board also voted Tuesday to hire Turf Master to provide snow and ice removal at the Route 528 Park & Ride for the next three snow seasons, which stretch from Nov. 1 through March 31. The authority has employed Turf Master to provide this service for the past five years.

Transit Authority executive director John Paul said Turf Master is called whenever snow and ice removal is needed, so the annual cost of contracting with the company fluctuates.

“It depends on the year,” he said about the cost. “They are the current service, and we haven't had an issue with them.”
