TOWN CRIER

The Butler County Community College trustees on Wednesday:

• Extended contracts with several groups of employees, as well as President Nick Neupauer, whose contract was extended through June 30, 2015.

Neupauer will receive the same $2,000 wage increase in 2012-2013 as other BC3 administrators and professional/technical employees.

Also receiving one-year contract extensions, all with new expiration dates of June 30, 2014, were the BC3 education support professionals, BC3 maintenance, shipping and receiving services and custodial employees, and BC3 campus police officers.

• Heard that Neupauer and Bill O'Brien, BC3's vice president of continuing education and off-campus sites, continue to investigate whether to expand the college's Cranberry Township site, which has reached its maximum enrollment, or construct a new location.

They are working with potential partners and architectural firms to determine the best course of action, after which they will pursue potential funding sources, Neupauer said.

• Learned the college's three biggest projects in 2012-2013 will be completion of the Shaffer Walking Trail at the main campus, a door replacement program and a redesign of its website.

In May, the college received four bids from contractors interested in building the one-mile-long trail named for E. Bertrum and Esther Shaffer, whose estate donated $334,000 to BC3. Neupauer has said the trail will be completed this fall.

Replacement of doors on all BC3 campuses with more energy-efficient and handicap-accessible models will be funded by a $315,000 grant by the state Department of Education, as well as matching funds from the college.

• Approved buying car and helicopter burn simulators for the college's public safety programs for a total of $155,555.

Learned that Coca-Cola, which is the college's contracted soda vendor on campus, awarded a grant for 24 recycling bins to BC3, which will be used to recycle glass, plastic and aluminum containers on the main campus.

The bins will be in place by the fall term, said Susan Chagnon, BC3 communications and marketing director.

The college recycles paper and cardboard on campus through a third-party vendor and has been trying to implement a recycling program for other materials for more than a year, Chagnon said.

The Butler County Commissioners on Wednesday:• Approved an application to the Bureau of Justice Assistance to buy eight bullet proof vests. The vests will cost $4,560 and need to be replaced every five years, said Tom Holman, deputy court administrator.Approved a one-year maintenance agreement with Cummins Bridgeway for the generators in the prison.
