TOWN CRIER
BUTLER TWP — The Butler County Community College trustees on Wednesday:
• Approved a $592,000 contract with Tedesco Construction of White Oak, Pa., for construction of the Shaffer Walking Trail at the main campus.
The one-mile-long trail, which is named for E. Bertrum and Esther Shaffer, whose estate donated $334,000 to BC3, is slated for completion this fall.
Trustees removed a bridge from the trail because of the cost. Bids for the bridge itself were $260,000 to $356,000, while the college had budgeted $239,000 for it.
• Approved a $412,385 contract to Glass Erectors of Reynoldsville, Pa., for replacement of doors on all BC3 campuses with more energy-efficient and handicap-accessible models. The project is funded by a $315,000 grant from the state Department of Education and matching funds from the college.
• Approved a $43,200 contract with Anderson Strickler of Gaithersburg, Md., for a feasibility study for student housing at BC3’s main campus.
The study will examine demographics, weighing BC3’s student population against available student housing to determine demand and to determine if student housing on campus makes financial sense.
BC3 President Nick Neupauer said the study’s completion, and the trustees decision on how to proceed, will come before the end of the academic year in May.
The majority of the study’s cost is covered by an anonymous $25,000 donation to the college.
• Approved a $56,555 contract with Mazzei Construction of Allison Park for construction of a tanker platform, walkway and crossover bridge at the Public Safety Training Facility loading dock.
The project is funded by a federal Department of Justice grant, according to Jim Hrabosky, BC3’s vice president of administration and finance.
The new loading dock construction will be used as part of the college’s firefighter training course.
• Welcomed a new trustee, Nancy Staible of Zelienople.
She fills the seat of state Rep. Brian Ellis, R-11th, whose obligations in Harrisburg often kept him from attending trustee meetings.
Staible earned her undergraduate degree from Penn State University and later graduated from the Medical College of Georgia.
She has worked as a physician’s assistant for more than 30 years.
