James K. Shaddock

James K. Shaddock, 89, of Zelienople, formerly of Economy, passed away Sunday while under the compassionate care of the staff of the Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople.

He was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Big Run, a son of the late Charles Edward and Vira Ada (Musgrave) Shaddock.

Jim proudly served his country with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a staff sergeant, receiving the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star for service in the China-Burma-India Battle Campaign. While serving from 1942 until 1945, he also did tours of duty in Iran and the United States.

After his honorable discharge, he returned home and became an industrial engineer. He retired from A&S Railroad after 40 years.

He was a faithful member of the Rehoboth Evangelical Lutheran Church, Economy, where he was a member of the council and was a past secretary-treasurer as well as being on the church cemetery board.

Jim loved the outdoors and enjoyed both hunting and fishing. Jim was a life member of the Ambridge Sportsmen's Club. He was a self-taught carpenter and woodworker, building everything from his own home to benches and toys that his children and grandchildren will always cherish.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Lasater Myer.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Avonelle (Poling) Shaddock; two sons, James C. Shaddock of Freedom and Mark Shaddock of Cooperstown, Pa.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Connee and Bart Spagnola of Harmony Township, Beaver County, Carol and Gary Verrico of Daugherty Township, Beaver County, and Jayne M. Korak of Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren, Kara Spagnola and Brett Spagnola, both of Harmony Township, and Tina Verrico of Moon Township, Allegheny County; one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Verrico; two sisters, Mildred Erwin of Eagan, Minn., and Ruby Burgess, Hopewell; as well as nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the aides and nurses on the fourth floor Woodland Path at the Passavant Retirement Community, Zelienople, for their kind and compassionate care of Mr. Shaddock.

Shaddock, who died Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. July 24, 2011, will be received today in the <B>SAUL-GABAUER FUNERAL HOME</B>, 273 Route 68, Rochester, adjacent to Sylvania Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum. A graveside service with military honors will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Rehoboth Church Cemetery on Conway-Wallrose Road, Economy. Everyone is respectfully asked to go directly to the cemetery Wednesday morning.Military honors will be presented by members of the Beaver County Special Unit, and the Rev. Martin Galbraith will officiate and will represent the Rev.
