Butler Intermediate High School sophomore Samantha Shakely works on a painting that she'll donate for the student auction during the Fine Arts and Beyond Showcase on April 21.

BUTLER TWP— Samantha Shakely, a sophomore at Butler Intermediate High School, is spending a couple of weeks recreating a painting just to give it away.

Shakely on Thursday added shades of green to the background of "Shades of Summer," which depicts flowers and a humming bird. She hopes the painting can make money for the Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation.

The students in Erich Campbell's art classes began Monday working on projects that will be sold at a fundraiser for the foundation.

This is Shakely's third art show, and her second Fine Arts and Beyond Showcase.

"Last year, I saw people walking out with my pictures," she said.

But even if it's for a good cause, it can be hard, she said: "It's like it's one of your kids."

Campbell asks each of his students to do a project — a sculpture, photograph, drawing or painting — for the FABShowcase.

Jordan Emerick, a sophomore, is reproducing oil painter Vincent Van Gough's "What Fields May Come" with oil pastels.

"If it's going to sell, it's a cool thing,"he said.

The students benefit through grants that help teachers and academic scholarships for students. Additionally, the students have their work judged and bought.

The first time students sell a work of art can be a proud moment for them, Campbell said.

"This really shows them that art is something that can help other people out,"he said.

In addition to the art show, the FAB Showcase will include music, auctions, raffles and demonstrations.
