Richard E. Smith, 96, formerly of Natrona Heights died Friday at 9:45 a.m. at Allegheny Valley Hospital.

Born in Tarentum on Sept. 8, 1915, he was the son of Elmer J. Smith and Pearl (Brown) Smith. He lived in Natrona Heights for most of his life.

He graduated from Tarentum High School in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He also played in a band in the Army. He worked at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. in Brackenridge in storage and salvage control for 43 years.

He was affiliated with the Natrona Heights Congregation of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness on Melrose Avenue, Natrona Heights. He enjoyed music, played the violin and he loved his family.

He is survived by two sons, Mark R. (Sandy) Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., and Eric R. (Lannea) Smith of Buffalo Township; one daughter, Janine M. (Archie) Devlin of Creedmoor, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean M. (Sickles) Smith, in 1997; his twin brother, Robert Smith; and his sister, Anna Belle Smith.

SMITH — A memorial service for Richard E. Smith, who died Friday, June 1, 2012, will be held at 7 p.m. June 9 in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, Melrose Avenue, Natrona Heights, by Elder Russell Painter.Private family burial was held in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell at 1 p.m. Saturday.Arrangements are by Duster Funeral Home, Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum.For more information, visit dusterfuneralhomeinc.com.
