'Tavern' play will benefit library

MARS — Residents have the opportunity to enjoy theater and to support the Mars Public Library at the same time.

The Northern Lights Theater Company will present “Over the Tavern” at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14 at the library on Grand Avenue.

Donna McGee, producer, artistic director and an actress in the play, said while hilarity ensues throughout the show, the characters work through their various issues each in their own way.

McGee, who has raised $58,000 for charities by producing 12 plays in the past eight years, said the local adults and child actors expertly bring the complex characters to life in “Over the Tavern,” a comedy about a Catholic family in the 1950s.

Cole Pfennigwerth, a sixth-grader at Haine Middle School in Cranberry Township, stars as Rudy.

“He’s a lot like me because I’m kind of the class clown,” Cole said.

McGee pointed out that Cole’s father, Jared Pfennigwerth, played Rudy 20 years ago in a production of “Over the Tavern” at the Pittsburgh Public Theater.

Jessica Winters, who attends Mars Centennial School, plays Annie, Rudy’s emotional sister. Jessica has acted in several plays.

“You get to play people you aren’t like, and you get to be someone else,” Jessica said of her love for acting.

Two actual parent-child duos appear in the show, acting opposite one another. Glenn Ridenour and his 16-year-old son, Alex, play father and son. In a casting twist, mother and daughter Ann Marie DePretis and her 9-year-old daughter, Gianna, will play mother and son.

Library director Vince Gadrix said the library received $2,000 when McGee produced “Lost in Yonkers” at the library two years ago.

He said the library’s meeting room can accommodate 65 people at each show.

“They do a wonderful job,” Gadrix said of McGee’s theater company.

In addition to serving as a fundraiser for the library, Gadrix said having a play there has other benefits.

“It attracts people who might not necessarily have a connection with the library,” he said.
