Brothers charged in thefts

Police recover stolen bicycle

A man caught riding a boy’s stolen bicycle worth hundreds of dollars faces several charges including theft. So does the man’s 15-year-old brother, Butler police said.

The Berg four-wheeled bike was reported stolen March 16 from the back of the boy’s home in the 400 block of West New Castle Street.

The owner, a teenage boy, bought the bicycle after saving money from his paper route job. He told police its value is $700.

Two weeks later, the officer who took the report was on patrol when he spotted 21-year-old Michael Ray John of Butler pedaling the stolen bike on North Monroe Street.

Asked where he got the bicycle, according to court documents, John replied, “I found it in my yard.”

The officer wasn’t buying that story and pressed him. John eventually confessed to stealing a different bicycle, a Genesis mountain bike, police said.

He allegedly admitted taking that bike, valued at $100, from a home in the 400 block of West North Street.

During a later interview at the police station, John acknowledged that he was with his 15-year-old brother when the younger sibling stole the pedal bike, documents said,

On their way home, John recounted that he noticed the mountain bike, and he took that one, police said.

Police on Wednesday interviewed the 15-year-old suspect, who corroborated his older brother’s account. He said he had left the pedal bike at John’s house.

John is charged with theft, conspiracy to commit theft and receiving stolen property. His preliminary hearing is May 5.

The younger suspect faces similar charges in Butler County juvenile court.
