Lancers overwhelm young Rockets, 62-17

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock HighSchool football team jumped on top first against the No. 3-ranked team in the state, but the defense wasn't able to contain the General McLane ground game as the Rockets fell 62-17 at home Friday evening.

Using a running attack of Ryan Skelton, Dan Skelton, and Ben Deppen, the Lancers rolled up 464 yards of total offense without punting the ball once.

"I really feel we had a lot of good execution from the offensive standpoint," said General McLane head coach Jim Wells. "We have a talented squad of kids who were able to execute plays tonight."

General McLane (5-0) executed big and was able to pick up big yardage on each possession. The Lancers' longest drive of the game was its last — a five-play, 60-yard drive topped off with a 48-yard touchdown run by sophomore second team running back Sam McCaughtry.

Three times General McLane was able to find its way into the end zone on one-play drives. The first was in the first quarter when running back Ben Deppen answered a Slippery Rock field goal with a 60-yard run. Running back Ryan Skelton picked up seven points for the Lancers on a one-play 75-yard drive with 4:38 remaining in the half. Skelton scored again two minutes later on another one-play drive, this time for 43 yards.

"Really, everyone executed well," Wells said. "Deppen, Skelton, Drew Asterino … and our offensive line did a nice job at blocking. Our receivers also did a good job of blocking on the perimeter."

For Slippery Rock coach Clyde Conti, the game was no more than a learning experience for the Rockets.

"Every loss is difficult," he said. "We try to always take away something good and keep plugging away. I thought we did some things well against the (General McLane). There's no crime losing to someone who is better than you, and I think our kids' effort was there tonight."

The Rockets (0-5) were able to make the first strike against the Lancers early in the first quarter when quarterback Jonathon Powell plowed through the General McLane defensive line for a 1-yard touchdown run. The play was set up by a 55-yard run by Andrew Novak, giving the Rockets the ball first-and-goal at the 5.

Bicehouse answered an 82-yard Skelton kickoff return with a 32-yard field goal with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

But Deppen immediately answered the Rockets score as he barreled 60 yards into the end zone.

General McLane's domination only paused once throughout the rest of the game, when running back Jesse Kniess ran 19 yards into the end zone for the Rockets.
