GREENVILLE — Isaac Osborne regrets not playing football for Slippery Rock High until this season.

These days, Rockets opponents are regretting Osborne's change of heart.

The senior, who hadn't played since the eighth grade, rushed for 103 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns and also caught two passes for 55 yards as Slippery Rock rolled to a 50-13 win over Reynolds Friday night.

Not bad for a guy who finally gave in to peer pressure and signed up for football this summer.

"I didn't know what to expect, to be completely honest," Osborne said.

There have been plenty of surprises along the way on this journey for Osborne, who, at 6-feet-3 and 170-pounds, cuts an imposing figure in pads.

Perhaps the biggest shocker was when the Slippery Rock coaching staff wanted to make Osborne a running back.

"In eighth grade I was a fullback and I was pretty much as tall as I am now," Osborne said. "You just have to go with the flow."

He went with that flow on a jet sweep on Slippery Rock's third play from scrimmage, found a crack and burst through it for a 50-yard touchdown.

Later in the quarter, he rumbled five yards for a score that gave the Rockets a quick 21-0 advantage.

Osborne, who is one of the top hurdlers on the track and field team, has been amazed at how much he has contributed this season.

"It has been really exciting," he said. "I never knew I could do it."

Osborne is following in the footsteps of another athlete at the school who didn't play a down until his senior year.

Last year, Zack Ejzak joined the Rockets and ended up shattering the school record for single-season receiving yards with 889.

Osborne watched Ejzak on Friday nights from the stands. That was when he got his first football itch.

"His attitude was so positive and he made such an impact, I figured, 'What the heck?'" Osborne said.

He wasn't alone. Fellow athletes in other sports like Ethan Geisler (track and field and basketball), Ryan Gordon (basketball), Mike Ramirez (soccer) and Dan Jeon (soccer) signed up to play as well.

Gordon, only a sophomore, showed flashes of a bright future on the football field Friday night, catching two passes from backup quarterback Sean White for 103 yards.

His 70-yard catch and run for a touchdown capped a frenetic stretch in the fourth quarter, when the two teams combined for four touchdowns in four minutes.

Slippery Rock quarterback Jono Powell was one of the biggest recruiters of Osborne and the gaggle of other athletes who hadn't slipped on football cleats before.

Powell, who scored three more rushing touchdowns against Reynolds, has been holding impromptu Football 101 courses for his new teammates.

"He's helped a lot," Osborne said. "I have to admit, before I started playing, I didn't know anything. But everyone has helped."

Slippery Rock coach Clyde Conti was giddy at the prospect of getting Osborne and the others in uniform.

His glee has only grown as Osborne has continued to perform.

"He's a great athlete," Conti said. "We're happy we got him out for the team."

The win was a much-needed one for Slippery Rock, not just for its place in the standings, but for its psyche after a tough loss to Sharon last week.

The Rockets have some stiff challenges on their schedule in the coming weeks.

"We got the ball to some different people tonight," Conti said. "Now here comes the meat and potatoes."
