JACKSON TWP— Mount Lebanon coach Dori Oldaker admitted her girls basketball team came out flat Saturday at Seneca Valley.

A simple timeout cured that.

The undefeated Blue Devils trailed 12-5 — the Lady Raiders completing a 10-0 run — when Oldaker called time with 2:04 left in the first quarter.

"We weren't hitting our shots and we we weren't getting back on defense,"Oldaker said. "There are no excuses. We weren't getting it done."

After the timeout, Mount Lebanon (8-0) went on a 34-2 run for the remainder of the half and cruised to a 63-23 victory.

It marked the team's fourth win by 40 or more points this season.

Before the timeout, the Blue Devils sank just two of their first 12 shots. They shot over 50 percent (23 of 44) for the balance of the game.

They wound up with a whopping 49-22 edge in rebounds and forced 26 turnovers — 22 in the first three quarters, before Oldaker emptied her bench.

"We don't usually rebound like that,"the coach said. "We usually just try to stay even on the boards."

The loss didn't bother Seneca Valley coach Kelly Mathews. The effort of her team did.

"I can handle us getting beat because the other team is better than us,"Mathews said. "But they were beating us to loose balls consistently and we weren't rebounding at all.

"They outhustled us, plain and simple. That's the part of this game that's disappointing to me."

Trailing 5-2, the Lady Raiders enjoyed their lone spurt of the day as Jackie Mangola sank a lay-up, Aly Eagle nailed a 3-pointer, Shayna Elser canned a free throw, Eagle hit a baseline jumper and Nicole Roche sank an eight-footer for the aforementioned 12-5 lead.

Seneca Valley scored 11 more points the rest of the game. Mangola and Catherine Messmer, the team's two inside players, both played in foul trouble and combined for five points and five rebounds.

Mangola fouled out with 22 seconds left.

Eagle paced the Lady Raiders (2-4) with 13 points, including three treys.

Six Mount Lebanon players had at least five rebounds each. Jackie Babe led the Blue Devils with 17 points and added five boards. Emily Miller added 15 points and six boards.

Babe, Angelina Liberi and Heather Dean are returning starters from a Mount Lebanon team that finished 16-9 last season.

"I feel like we've got a shot at winning our section. But it's not an easy section to win,"Oldaker said.

"They have a very good basketball team,"Mathews admitted. "And we're not a very good team right now. Still, they shouldn't have dominated the boards like they did. They're not any bigger than we are."

Saturday's game marked the middle of a stretch in which Seneca Valley plays New Castle, Mount Lebanon and Butler in a span of five days. The Lady Raiders played District 10 power Villa Maria 10 days ago.

"We don't have to schedule so many tough non-conference games, but there's a reason we do that,"Mathews said. "Games like this make you better by showing what you need to work on.

"I don't care if we never win a non-conference game, as long as we're still playing in February instead of sitting on our butts."
