Karns City boys capture unusual OT victory

Aaron McGarvey scored on a penalty kick in overtime after a strange corner kick play as the Karns City boys soccer team opened the season with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday.

The Gremlins' Cory Terwilliger scored with 1:12 remaining in the contest to tie the score at 1 and to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Cody Zabicki's header off a corner kick was heading toward the net, but a DuBois sweeper slapped the ball away and was whistled for a penalty.

McGarvey then secured the win with the penalty kick.

Sophomore Joe King recorded seven saves in goal for the Gremlins, who will host East Forest Thursday.

Mars 3, Freeport 2 — The Planets (2-0) received goals from freshman Ryan McKenzie, senior Bob McKinney and senior Nick Perri. The Planets host Neshannock Thursday.

Knoch 2, Kittanning 1 — ScottyHerman scored the winning goal in overtime to lead the Knights to the season-opening victory.Travis Tasker scored the other goal for the Knights.Kittanning tied the score with 30 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.Knoch will play at Deer Lakes Thursday.

Amanda Sharbaugh scored a goal and added an assist as Knoch downed Mars, 2-1.Libby Burris added a goal for the Knights (1-1) and Audrey Scott had an assist.Knoch will host Riverside today.<B>Seneca Valley 2, Fox Chapel 1</B> — Rebecca Pecora scored the tie-breaking goal with five minutes left to lead the Raiders to a section win.Jessica Meurer scored the other goal for Seneca Valley (2-0, 1-0).<B>Slippery Rock 12, Maplewood 1 —</B> The Rockets (3-0) dominated the Tigers with multiple players contributing goals and assists.Slippery Rock's first two wins of the season came over the weekend when they won the Harbor Creek Tournament.

Alyssa Skoff managed 30 assists and both Kelsey Rovnan and Amanda Roche had seven kills in Mars' 3-0 sweep of Freedom in a Section 2-AA match.Jodi Leopold added four kills and four aces for the Planets, who won by scores of 25-10, 25-8 and 25-13.<B>Pine-Richland 3, Butler 0</B> — Yuki Schaper had 12 digs and two aces, but the Golden Tornado fell in straight sets 25-11, 25-20, 25-17 in the season opener.Ashley Grenet added six kills and six digs, and BeckySmith six kills and three blocks for Butler.<B>Redbank Valley 3, Moniteau 0 —</B> Despite six kills from Kenzie Timblin and five assists from Amanda Gladd, the Warriors dropped this KSAC match by scores of 25-16, 25-8 and 25-14.Kendra Hall added five digs and two kills for Moniteau.<B>Knoch 3, Riverview 1 —</B> Zoe Hughes had 11 kills and Liz Hill had eight kills for the Knights (2-0), who won by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 19-25 and 25-11.<B>Grove City 3, West Middlesex 0</B> — Ashley Patterson had 12 points, nine kills and eight assists as the Eagles won their season opener 25-20, 25-16, 25-12.Logan Sanders added 10 points and Rachel Ennis 10 assists for Grove City.
