Woman injured after high-speed chase hit 95 mph

CLEARFIELD TWP — A 31-year-old woman was hospitalized early Friday morning after she led police on a high-speed chase across southwestern Armstrong County.

The chase ended when Margaretta V. Askey of Templeton crashed her vehicle just after entering Butler County.

State police in Kittanning said the pursuit started in Manor Township, Armstrong County, just before 3 a.m. when troopers saw Askey driving west in the eastbound lanes of Route 422, which is a divided highway.

Two police vehicles were in pursuit of Askey’s vehicle for about 12 miles as she drove through Manor, North Buffalo, East Franklin and West Franklin townships in Armstrong County. The chase hit speeds of 95 mph, police said.

While in West Franklin Township, Askey allegedly steered her vehicle into the side of one of the police vehicles as it attempted to slow her vehicle.

The chase ended in Clearfield Township when Askey crashed. She was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.

No police officers were injured, but police listed 18 civilian vehicles as victims in the incident. Police did not say if any of the 18 were hit.

Askey is charged with four felony counts of aggravated assault, fleeing and eluding, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, 22 counts of recklessly endangering another person and several summary violations.
