Butler grad O'Toole swimmer of weekSHIPPENSBURG — Butler graduate and Shippensburg University sophomore Stephanie O'Toole has been named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week.O'Toole broke five individual school records, helped break one relay school mark and moved into second place all-time at Shippensburg in the 50-yard freestyle during the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason University.O'Toole set school marks of 51.21 seconds in the 100 free, 55.74 in the 100 butterfly, 2:17.83 in the 200 breaststroke, 2:01.61 in the 200 individual medley and 4:24.25 in the 400 IM.She swam the 50 free in 23.78 seconds.
Cranberry's Hardman gets fencing medalCRANBERRY TWP — Aquinas Academy fencer Harry Hardman, a Cranberry Township resident, won the bronze medal at the recent “Black Squirrel” Senior Mixed Foil competition, sponsored by the Kent State Fencing Club.The event drew fencers from colleges and fencing clubs throughout Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.Hardman recently won a silver medal at the “Nightmare on Butler Street” Corsair Fencing Club's Halloween Tournament. He is scheduled to compete in the Crimson Cup Senior Mixed Foil Tournament next month at Indiana State University.
Ex-Red Sox pitcher Ferriss dead at 94JACKSON, Miss. — David “Boo” Ferriss, a Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped lead the team to the 1946 World Series, has died. He was 94.Rick Cleveland, a close friend of the former player, says Ferriss died Thursday at his home in Cleveland, Miss., surrounded by family. Cleveland says Ferriss had been in declining health for several weeks.Ferriss pitched six years for the Red Sox from 1945-50. He had his best season in 1946, when he finished with a 25-6 record and 3.25 ERA and was named an American League All-Star. The Shaw, Miss., native’s career was shortened by a shoulder injury in 1947, but he finished with a 65-30 career record.Ferriss was later the baseball coach at Delta State University, where he won 639 games over 26 seasons.
Pacquiao planning to fight in AprilTOKYO — Manny Pacquiao says his next fight will be in April or May next year as that best fits his schedule as a senator for the Philippines. And he would like a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr.Pacquiao, who defeated Jessie Vargas for a welterweight title earlier this month, told reporters today that the opponent for his next fight is still undecided.But he is confident he will beat Mayweather, if there is a next time.
