Karen Virginia Chaney, 71, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday at Avalon Springs Nursing, Mercer.

She was born April 20, 1939, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Robert and the late Lorraine (Frick) Slaugenhaupt.

Mrs. Chaney lived in Butler for 57 years. She moved to Mercer in 2008.

At age 41, she enrolled in the nursing program at Butler County Community College.

Mrs. Chaney worked as a geriatric and Alzheimer nurse for 27 years. She was an employee at St. John's Nursing Home in Mars for much of her nursing career.

Mrs. Chaney was a loving mother and loyal friend.

She had a lifelong love of books and was a gifted artist.

For several years, she volunteered at the Art Center in Butler.

Through the years, she created many flower arrangements for friends, family members, weddings and church functions.

She enjoyed gardening and generously shared her flowers with others.

Upon moving to Mercer, she became a member of the Mercer Baptist Church, and found great joy in her church family.

Karen lived at the Avalon Springs Nursing Home for seven months during her illness, and shared great camaraderie with fellow nurses and health workers.

She is survived by three daughters, Kelsey (Rich Laube) Chaney of Cape Coral, Fla., Chris (Bruce) Sturtevant of Mercer, and Jayme (Ron) Dickson of Enon Valley; and two grandsons, Sam and Gus Dickson.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Meghan K. Chaney, who died July 12, 2010.
