Tornado can’t trap Foxes
BUTLER TWP — Inside, outside, off the bench, Fox Chapel came at Butler from all directions Friday night.
The Foxes (7-2, 3-0) used a 14-0 first-quarter run to seize the lead and its versatility to maintain it in posting a 62-43 boys basketball victory over the Golden Tornado.
“My hat’s off to them,” Butler coach Joe Lewandowski said. “They can hurt you in a lot of ways and they never let up once they got in front.
“They played hard the entire game and you have to respect that. They cut to the basket well and they can hit from outside.”
Blake Anderson’s trey just 36 seconds into the game gave Butler (4-6, 0-3) its only lead of the night.
That lead lasted all of 39 seconds.
Fox Chapel’s 14-0 run followed, with five different players scoring during the spurt. Six Foxes scored in the first quarter alone.
Scott Eisner sank two 3-pointers during the spurt. He had five treys for the game.
The Tornado pulled to within seven at 22-15 with 4:05 left in the half on an Anderson jumper, but Fox Chapel scored the game’s next eight points and led by 14 at halftime.
“This is a big game for us because it’s our first section game on the road,” said first-year Fox Chapel coach Ben O’Connor. “We don’t play in a Christmas tournament this year, so we’ll be idle for a while after this.”
Fox Chapel’s lead never left double-digits in the second half and the 19-point final margin was the largest of the evening.
Three Tornado players — Jade Burka, Cody Fleeger and Nick Martini — fouled out of the contest. Burka picked up two fouls before the game was two minutes old.
His fourth and fifth fouls came in succession — a personal foul followed by a technical foul — to take him out of the game with 2:01 left in the third quarter and the Tornado trailing by 13.
With Burka sitting most of the night, Butler was out-rebounded by a 41 to 30 margin.
Tiff Harner led the Foxes with seven rebounds. Four Fox Chapel players had at least five rebounds each.
“We have to develop better continuity no matter who’s out there on the floor,” Lewandowski said.
Eisner paced Fox Chapel with 19 points and added six rebounds. Rob Tenennini had 12 points and John Hastings added 11 points and five boards.
Tenennini entered the game averaging 14 points per contest for the Foxes. Hastings is averaging 12.5 per game.
“We’ve had seven or eight players score in double figures already this year,” O’Connor said. “Balance has been the key to our success.
“We’ve been a tough team to defend.”
Noah Hartung suited up for Butler for the first time this season and scored 14 points. He has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery late in the football season.
Hartung was cleared medically to play Friday afternoon.
“It felt good seeing Noah out there,” Lewandowski said. “He adds a lot to our game and he’s only going to get better the more he plays.”
Anderson added 14 points for the Tornado and Aaron Dorondo came off the bench to snare eight rebounds.
Butler suffered only seven turnovers in the game to Fox Chapel’s 13, but the Foxes sank 18 of 21 free throws and just under 50 percent (19-of-40) from the field.
The Tornado attempted only nine free throws and sank but 18-of-60 shots from the floor.
Butler’s three section losses have been by an average margin of 20 points.
“We’re looking forward to our Christmas Tournament because we’re finally going to have everybody healthy at practice now,” Lewandowski said.
Fox Chapel has won six consecutive games and does not play again until Jan. 3.
Butler won the junior varsity game, 49-34.
