Buzzer-beaters go both ways

Seneca's falls for victory, but Mars' falls short

JACKSON TWP — One buzzer-beater went in. The other didn't.

That was the difference between a mob scene of happiness for the Seneca Valley boys basketball team and a sad saunter off the court for Mars.

Seneca Valley junior Kevin Mayberry hit a leaning jumper just before the buzzer to give the Raiders a 51-50 win over Sto-Rox in the Seneca Valley Tip-off Tournament Friday.

After the winning shot, Mayberry's teammates raced onto the court to congratulate him.

"Coming into this game, I was pretty sick," Mayberry said. "I've been pretty sick all week. I made some bad decisions in the first half, and coach pulled me. It kind of fired me up."

In the first game of the night, Tim Frye's fade away jumper clanked off the side of the rim for Mars, giving Ringgold a 60-59 victory.

After a slow start by Frye and his team, the senior shined in the final three quarters.

He scored 10 points in the second frame to help Mars close a gap that got as big as 18 early in the second quarter.

He finished the night with 29 points, but his final shot missed its mark.

"Tim can play," said Mars coach Rob Carmody. "He played last year on one leg. It's nice having him back with two legs. He works as hard as any kid we have.

"We want him to take the final shot."

Mayberry, on the other hand, wasn't sure if he would get any shots after a poor start.

He spent much of the first half and the third quarter on the bench, but when Dan Stanley landed awkwardly and had to leave with a left leg injury in the fourth quarter, Mayberry returned to score seven points in the frame.

None were bigger than his final two.

"With 13 seconds left, I knew if I got the ball, I was going to the hole," Mayberry said. "If it falls, it falls."

It fell and in the process gave Seneca Valley an early lift following a 3-21 season.

"It was clutch," Mayberry said. "It feels good. Coming into the year after a 3-21 season, we needed this. Hopefully, this will carry us."

Seneca Valley coach Vic Giannotta is a little more cautious.

The Raiders were sluggish most of the night, falling behind 11-3 late in the first quarter before rallying.

Dave Monteleone was a big part of the comeback. The 6-foot-5 senior center scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.

"It's positive we won, but we have to get better," Giannotta said. "Winning is a whole lot better than losing, though."

You don't have to convince Mars of that.

The Planets started out dreadfully, hitting just 1-of-13 shots in the opening quarter.

"Coach can't come in with speech No. 84 and get everyone pumped up and ready to play," Carmody said. "(The players) need to have an attitude when they are walking around the school and getting on the bus that they are ready to play."Mars was able to cut an 18-point Ringgold advantage to seven by the break and pulled ahead briefly at the end of the third quarter. The Planets led 59-58 with 35 seconds left in the game, but Ringgold was able to score with 24 seconds remaining to force Mars into a last-ditch possession."One thing I have learned since the time I've been here at Mars is to never question our kids' ability to fight back," Carmody said. "Mars kids don't quit."Robert Heller scored 18 points and Kellen Holmes 15 for Ringgold.Robbie Herold added 13 points for Mars.STO-ROX 50Mike Salters 3-7 0-0 6, Doug Spencer 3-7 2-4 8, Alex DeMichele 3-7 3-7 9, Tike Cole 0-0 0-0 0, Terrel Bonner 0-0 0-0 0, Joe Tutino 2-9 0-0 4, Anthony DeMichele 2-7 0-0 6, Pat Boylan 1-5 0-0 2, Anthony Thomas 4-13 2-2 13, Jules Crosby 1-2 0-0 2.
