All-around effort paces BlueSox

The Butler BlueSox won their second straight game at Pullman Park Tuesday night and all three facets of their play had a part in the latest triumph.

Three Butler pitchers — beginning with starter Matt Lengel — held Chillicothe to three runs on nine hits as the BlueSox prevailed 7-3.

The offense managed 13 hits and took control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Not to be outdone, Butler's defense came up with several great plays to preserve the victory.

Butler also defeated Chillicothe Monday night by a score of 5-3.

"Chillicothe has a great offense and solid pitching," said BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski. "But in the game of baseball, you have to come out every night and play hard. That's what we did in the last two games."

Butler (5-6 second half) held a modest 3-2 edge entering the bottom of the fourth.

Chris Rasky's leadoff single was followed by Taylor Juran's double, which chased Chillicothe starter Ryan Ebner from the game.

Ryan Garman took the mound and gave up a single through a drawn-in infield by Jon Danielczyk, scoring Rasky.

Colin Harrington and Shayne Houck both managed a run-scoring flyout later in the inning and Jason Radwan singled to plate Matt Berezo.

Houck had already hit a solo home run in the third inning.

Butler's No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters in the game — Berezo, Houck and Radwan — went a combined 6-for-11 with three runs scored and five RBI.

"That part of the order, it's all about who's hot," said Rebyanski. "We're always trying to find guys who can protect Shayne."

The fourth-inning runs were the last Butler would score, but Lengel and Butler's bullpen made the lead stand.

Lengel lasted seven innings and allowed three runs — two earned — on seven hits to earn the win. He struck out one and walked two.

"Matt's been in the mix for us all season," said Rebyanski. "He's struggled at times, especially with his off-speed stuff, but once he gets in a groove, he pitches well."

James Connelly and Wes Rich both pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Arguably the most impressive aspect of Butler's play was its defense.

Aside from a fourth-inning error, the BlueSox proved solid in the field.

Great plays were turned in by Houck at third base, Rasky in left field and Stephen Vranka in center.

Vranka's diving catch closed the top of the eighth inning.

"All season long guys have been making plays like that," said Rebyanski. "We actually have some guys playing out of position, but they've been filling in well."

Paints manager Brian Mannino credited Butler's defense for making clutch plays.

"We hit some balls right on the nose, but they were hit at guys," he said. "You can't do anything about that."

Butler staked Lengel to an early lead as Houck doubled in a run in the bottom of the first frame and Radwan drove in another with a sacrifice fly.
