HAMPTON TWP — Knoch and Hampton are playing a bit of role reversal Friday night.

The Knights were winless in 2009 before upsetting the Talbots, 10-7, to trigger a three-game winning streak that earned Knoch a WPIAL playoff berth.

When Hampton (1-3, 1-1) hosts this 7:30 p.m. kickoff between Greater Allegheny Conference rivals, it will be facing an unbeaten Knoch team (4-0, 1-0). The Talbots are coming off a 20-3 triumph over Valley.

"I know it's a cliche, but we have to throw the records out right now," Knoch coach Mike King said. "Our nonsection wins don't mean anything in terms of the playoffs.

"(Hampton coach) Jacque DeMatteo will have his team ready to play hard. I respect Hampton's program. They play between the whistles and they can grind it on you," King added.

Talbots running back Mike Hyre had 25 carries for 121 yards and two touchdowns against Valley last week.

"They use him a lot, and the best defense is a good offense," King said. "When you can control the ball for half a quarter, it can be such a boost. If you're having that done to you, it's hard to overcome."

While Hampton has scored only 45 points, Knoch has scored 210. The Knights have only allowed 28.

"They can hurt you in so many different ways," DeMatteo said. "They can run, throw, hurt you on the perimeter or bang on you inside."

The Talbots return only five starters on offense: senior quarterback Phil Powell and linemen Jordan Shulman, Samuel Flowers, Andrew Fustos and John Egnacheski.

"We're trying to establish the running game because of that line," DeMatteo said.

Nose guard Shulman and tackle Bryan Gribbin are the lone returning defensive starters.

Knoch quarterbacks Ky Kenyon and Dakota Bruggeman have combined to throw for 384 yards and seven touchdowns. Andrew Rumburg-Goodlin, Adam Tuzikow and Kenyon have combined to rush for 966 yards and 14 TDs.

"You'd have to go back to our 2002 team, when we had (Mark) Rupert and (Dusty) Ziacik, to find a Knoch team that had this kind of balance," King said. "That team started out 8-0."

Notes: In the last two games, the Mars defense has surrendered two touchdowns and both of them came in the fourth quarter when the game had already been decided. ...
