SLIPPERY ROCK — Seven new inductees will join the Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of Fame Sept. 26 in ceremonies before The Rock's home football game with Indiana (Pa.).
The 26th class of inductees will include Garry Benford, Roger Flynn, Laurel Heilman, Duane Kirklin, Robert Ogoreuc, William Rometo and Charles Vietmeier.
Rometo, a 1946 graduate, will be honored posthumously.
Induction ceremonies will begin at 2:30 p.m. with a social hour in the multipurpose room of the University Union, followed by dinner at 3:30. Tickets are $35 and are available through the SRU athletic department at Morrow Field House.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University freshman Amy Halls and sophomore Brianne Dishong were named first team all-PSAC West in women's lacrosse.Halls led SRU in scoring and set a school record with 57 goals. Dishong played defense and led the team with 42 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers.Halls and Dishong are the first SRU players to be named all-conference since the program was reinstated in 2007.
SLIPPERY ROCK— The 29th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's tennis team received a berth in the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championships.The Rock (20-4) will face Kutztown (11-5) May 8 in an Atlantic Regional preliminary round match at Bloomsburg.SRU is in NCAA postseason play for the eighth time in the past 10 seasons.
STATE COLLEGE — Former Penn State tailback Curt Warner is headed to the College Football Hall of Fame.Warner is the Nittany Lions' career rushing leader with nearly 3,400 yards. He also scored 33 touchdowns in college, including 24 on the ground.Warner ran for 117 yards and two scores in the 27-23 win over Georgia in the 1983 Sugar Bowl to help Penn State win a national title his senior year. He went on to star in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
PITTSBURGH — Senior wide receiver T.J. Porter and senior defensive lineman Tommie Duhart have left Pitt's football team and plan to transfer to another school, according to a statement issued by coach Dave Wannstedt Thursday.Both players were suspended from spring practice for disciplinary reasons and were dropped from the depth chart.Porter, from Pahokee, Fla., was Pitt's third-leading receiver last season with 25 catches for 357 yards.Duhart, from Belle Glade, Fla., started four times while playing 19 games in two seasons. His best game came when he had five tackles and a sack during Pitt's 13-9 upset of then-No. 2 West Virginia in 2007.
