Gas prices continue to slide in last week

Pennsylvanians are paying a little less at the pump this Christmas, with gas prices dropping 6.1 cents per gallon over the last week, bringing the average price to around $2.52 per gallon, according to technology company GasBuddy’s daily survey of 5,269 Pennsylvania stations.

This brings the price 16.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago and 23.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

“Gas prices broadly continue to move lower across much of the country as oil prices continue to melt away,” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “Thirty-one states now are seeing at least one price under $2 per gallon while the most common price seen across the land has dropped to $1.99 per gallon, with over a quarter of stations in the U.S. under that psychologically important level.

“Americans are spending $225 million less every day on gasoline than they did some 75 days ago.”

Gas prices have seen major fluctuations in Pennsylvania over the past five years, with prices at the end of

2017, $2.69 per gallon;

2016, $2.46 per gallon;

2015, $2.18 per gallon;

2014, $2.63 per gallon;

2013, $3.42 per gallon.

Nationwide, prices have dropped by about 5.9 cents over the last week to an average $2.31 per gallon, according to the survey, bringing prices 23.1 cents per gallon lower than last month and 12.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.
