Severe storms pelt Butler County Wednesday

Thunderstorms hit Butler County as a cold front plowed through eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania at around 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh issued severe thunderstorm warnings for different regions of the county with storms expected to start impacting local municipalities around 4:30 p.m.

The storms brought with them heavy rain and winds, lightning and even some hail.

Pat Herald, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the storm’s effects were widely experienced across the region.

“It was pretty widespread showers and storms,” Herald said. “We heard of scattered instances of wind damage.”

According to Herald, the storm system’s passing through the region will usher in several days of dry weather, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-60s to the mid-80s through the weekend.

“It’s a bit more moderate temperature,” he said.

FirstEnergy reported that 1,320 customers had lost power at around 5:30 p.m., a majority of them in Lancaster Township, which had 599 customers without power at the height of the storm. All of the affected municipalities were expected to have power back on by 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A Butler County dispatcher said the Department of Emergency Services received several calls for downed wires and trees, many of which were also in the area of Lancaster Township, as well as Clinton Township.

The dispatcher said a portion of Route 19 in Lancaster Township had to be closed after the storm so crews could deal with downed wires.
