Sporting events to hope for

Butler County is becoming quite the gathering place for a wide range of sporting activities.

Just in the past year, the men’s state bowling tournament was hosted by Family Bowlaway and Freeway Lanes; Moraine State Park hosted an ultra-marathon; Pullman Park housed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference baseball tournament and Cooper’s Lake was home to the WPIAL cross country championships.

The Prospect League All-Star Game is coming to Pullman Park in July and the professional flying disc golf world championships will be taking place at Slippery Rock University and Moraine State Park next year.

For a rural county just north of a major city, that’s an impressive résumé.

And it can get better.

Here are a few possibilities — with details clearly needing to be worked out. These are just some raw ideas:

• Professional boxing card at Pullman Park — The two shows they’ve had there in recent years have drawn huge crowds and Butler still has a pro fighter to anchor a card in Brian Minto.

A summer boxing card — or even pro wrestling — under the lights in July or August might be worth pursuing.

• National amateur quad and/or motocross race at Switchback — That facility needs more notoriety and hosting a major event — or forming its own — could do the trick.

• A four-day amateur golf tournament — What can make this unique around here is have golfers play an 18-hole round on a different course each day.

Butler County has so many quality courses so geographically close to each other that this could be pulled off. The intrigue of such a tournament could attract quality amateur players from all over the region.

• County high school basketball tournament — The logistics of doing such a tournament during the season would be difficult. So why not do it over the summer?

Most high school basketball teams organize themselves and play in some type of summer league anyway. Get them all together for a weekend or week-long tournament somewhere.

• Battle of the Businesses — An Olympic-style event where area businesses form teams among their employees and compete against other businesses in non-contact activities.

Relay races, swimming, co-ed softball, volleyball, tug of war, etc., are possibilities. An event like this brings a community together.

These are merely a few ideas from one person.

With the quality baseball and softball fields, bowling lanes, golf courses, basketball courts, YMCA facilities, a lake, nature park, university and community college all within the Butler County boundaries, the possibilities are endless.

The Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau has been aggressive in landing significant events here and should be commended for such efforts.

Clearly, there is more to come.
