Courtney Shields began the PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships in style.

The Mars senior placed third in the girls 100-yard butterfly Wednesday at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.

Her time of 57.24 seconds was .89 seconds better than her seed time.

Shields also teamed with Jeanna Smialek, Rachel Szymkowiak and Gabri Pierre to place fourth in the day's opening event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:50.64.

Szymkowiak placed eighth in the butterfly event at 58.99.

Knoch's Rachel Tano finished sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:10.74) and Penn Township resident Anne Marie Bilott was seventh while swimming for Shady Side Academy at 2:12.34.
