Mars boys runners capture invitational title
Cody Kier was the top overall finisher with a time of 17 minutes, 31 seconds to help the Mars boys cross country team capture the MAC Invitational Championship Tuesday.
The Planets beat out 18 other teams while the Mars girls team finished fourth out of 16 teams.
Kier won by 12 seconds over Beaver Area's Royce Hackett. Teammate Derek Workman was sixth overall (18:23), Justin Stadelmyer 15th (18:56), Chris Alakhani 16th (19:00) and Marc Funderlich 36th (19:44) out of 134 runners.
The Mars girls team was led by Michelle Perri (14th place, 22:45), Gabri Pierre (16th, 22:54), Cara Hudac (21st, 23:02), Samantha Brandon (43rd, 24:37) and Rachel Pinkerton (47th, 24:43) out of 106 runners. Perri, Pierre and Brandon are freshmen.

Mars' Marisa Glew shot a 72 to finish first at the WPIAL Section 3 qualifying match, held Tuesday at Delmar Golf Course in Ellwood City.Lauren Glew, also from Mars, was second with a 74 and Seneca Valley's Chelsie Schade finished in fourth place with an 82.All three girls advance to the WPIAL finals, scheduled for Oct. 10 at the Pittsburgh Field Club in Fox Chapel.
