Hitters dominate Eagle County All-Star Game
BUTLER - Marty Pegher could only find one thing wrong with Saturday's Eagle County Baseball League All-Star Game.
Not enough at bats.
"When you're hitting like this, it's a lot of fun," the Zelienople catcher said of his National team's 10-7 win over the American at Pullman Park.
"You want to get up to the plate for some more, but in a game like this, everyone has to take his turn."
Pegher had two singles and four RBI in his only two at bats of the game. Zelienople teammate Dom Duggan and Saxonburg's Jason Dolmayer joined him with two-hit games for the winners.
The two teams combined for 17 runs, 28 hits and 21 stranded base runners.
"It's a hitters' league," Pegher said. "That was reflected by what happened out here today."
The Eagle County League had its first inter-league all-star game fin 11 years. It served as the second game of an all-star doubleheader Saturday, following the Butler County American Legion All-Star Game.
"I like this," Saxonburg manager Dan Cunningham said of the format. "This was a crisp, well-played game and everybody enjoyed himself.
"Our league has some hitters and this was a nice way to showcase them."
The Eagle County has put together an all-star team to face all-star squads from other leagues in recent years.
"I like this way better," Pegher said. "More guys get a chance to play and show what they can do against the league's best."
Some of the league's top pitchers were unable to make the game and with numerous make-ups of rained out games looming, regular pitchers were hesitant to throw Saturday.
The National squad used seven pitchers for an inning each with Chad Gourley of Natrona Heights getting the win. The American stars used six pitchers.
"We have six games in the next seven days and other teams are in similar situations," Freeport manager Wayne Grieser said. "Some guys pitched today who don't normally throw.
"The hitters had the advantage, but that's OK."
Bill Stahle of Cranberry doubled, singled and had two RBI to lead the American squad. Ken Bissel of Freeport added a pair of singles and scored two runs.
"Everything went well," Cunningham said. "We didn't wear any arms out, it was entertaining … I think we'll do it again next year."
