SRU pounds Lock Haven
LOCK HAVEN — A 13-0 lead wasn’t good enough — not in George Mihalik’s eyes.
“I had a few things to say at halftime,” the Slippery Rock University football coach said. “It looked like we were going through the motions.
“It was time to play some football.”
The Rock scored on its first four possessions of the second half and went on to post a 48-27 college football victory over winless Lock Haven Saturday at Hubert Jack Stadium.
The win allowed SRU (7-1, 5-0) to maintain sole possession of first place in the PSAC West. The loss was a conference record-tying 39th straight for the Bald Eagles (0-7, 0-5).
The Rock passed for 488 yards in the contest with receiver Devin Goda catching nine passes for school records of 225 yards and four touchdowns.
Cody Endres threw for a career-high 397 yards and four TDs before leaving the game in the third quarter. His passing yardage total was the second-highest ever recorded by a Rock quarterback. John Linhart threw for 502 yards against Clarion in 1992.
“They were stacking their defense against the run. They weren’t going to let us run,” Mihalik said. “We faced a lot of one-on-one coverage. Passing lanes were open and we took advantage of them.”
Lock Haven did not score against SRU’s first-team defense. The first of four Bald Eagle touchdowns did not occur until 1:31 remained in the third period and The Rock held a 34-0 lead.
“Lock Haven never quit and that’s a credit to them,” Mihalik said. “But I was disappointed in our performance in the fourth quarter. If you want to play, you have to perform better when you’re in there.”
The Rock took 15 penalties for 141 yards, most of which came in the fourth period.
“We lost our composure out there and that can’t happen,” Mihalik said. “That’s not the way we play football.
“That situation will be addressed and will not happen again.”
The Rock rolled up 564 yards of offense on the day. Mike Bongivengo caught touchdown passes of 40 and 33 yards from Endres in a 17-second span in the third quarter. After he caught the first, Zach Sheridan recovered a Bald Eagle fumble on the next play from scrimmage.
SRU hosts defending PSAC champion Mercyhurst (3-5, 1-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
