Vehicle assault victim blames reckless love

Felony charges held for court

CRANBERRY TWP — All charges against a woman accused of running over and breaking both feet of her girlfriend were held for court Friday by District Judge Dave Kovach.

Ronell Somerville of Cranberry Township is charged with two felonies, aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a vehicle, stemming from an incident on Jan. 25 at the Freedom Market along Freedom Road.

She is also charged with a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person and summary counts of driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.

Her preliminary hearing on Friday became contentious when the victim, identified as Katrice White, initially refused to testify against her girlfriend.

It came out in court proceedings that Somerville and White have been a couple for nine years and are raising three children together.

White initially did not want to testify against her girlfriend but changed her mind. While on the stand, White classified the incident as an accident and told the court she didn’t think Somerville intended to harm her.

The two had an argument inside a store, while the incident occurred shortly after in the parking lot.

Court personnel and attorneys huddled around a computer and watched surveillance video of the incident, which shows Somerville running over White’s feet.

However, Somerville immediately exited the car, assisted White in getting into the vehicle and drove her girlfriend to the hospital.

“My client immediately got out of her car to assist,” said Lee Rothman, Somerville’s attorney from Pittsburgh. “We know my client was crying and she was scared.”

White also admitted to the court that she never wanted to press charges against Somerville. The charges came only after doctors called police to the hospital after the accident.

In addition, Rothman told the court, Somerville and White continued to live together after the incident, and White was even present at the house when officers arrived to arrest Somerville.

Rothman alleged his client accidentally hit White while trying to pull close to the woman to start a conversation.

However, Assistant District Attorney Russ Karl disagreed with that characterization and said Somerville never should have been behind the wheel in the first place, being that she has a suspended license.

“If that’s not careless, if that’s not reckless, then I don’t know what is,” he said.

As part of his ruling, Kovach lifted a no-contact order between the women, meaning they can continue to live together while the case proceeds.

Somerville will next be in court in Butler on March 17.
