Butler linemen headed in different college directions

BUTLER TWP - They're going in different directions to different levels with different results from a year ago.

Butler lineman Adam Pritts and tight end Josh Wachter are headed to college football, which is all that matters to Golden Tornado coach Garry Cathell.

Pritts signed with Division I-AA Towson State (Md.) while Wachter opted for Division II Edinboro during national letter-of-intent day Wednesday.

"I never underestimate having the privilege of coaching kids who can play at the next level," Cathell said. "It's not the state or size of the program they'll be playing in, it's the experiences they're about to have."

Pritts is 6-feet-5, 280 pounds, and will play either guard or tackle at Towson State, which finished 3-8 overall last year, 0-8 during its first year in the Atlantic 10.

Gordy Combs is 73-64 overall in 13 years as Towson State head coach. The program competed in the Patriot League from 1997-2003, never finishing higher than third.

"They're looking to redshirt Adam and make him bigger," Cathell said. "He weighs 280 now and looks like a basketball player. He can easily fill out at 310 or 315 pounds."

Pritts spurned an offer from Toledo of the Mid-American Conference because Towson State came after him harder.

"They called every week," Pritts said. "We tried calling Toledo with some questions and never heard back. They just didn't seem all that interested.

"Towson's going to send me the weight-training program this week. I can't wait to get started. Since they moved up, they're offering scholarships now. By the end of my college education, there will be a lot of quality players there and we'll do all right in the league," he added.

Pritts plans to major in computer information systems and business, with business management as a secondary major.Wachter also considered Slippery Rock before opting for Edinboro. At 6-6, 260 pounds, he was recruited as a tight end."They've got two senior tight ends now, so I'll probably redshirt," he said.Cathell isn't so sure."They practically gave Josh a full ride and Division II schools generally give out partial scholarships," Cathell said. "They save the full scholarships for quarterbacks."Edinboro knows he can be an impact player right away. They really wanted him and my guess is that they'll use him right away," he added.Wachter caught 21 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns last fall despite missing the first three games of the season with a broken arm suffered during a pre-season automobile accident. He had to play with an elbow brace until the seventh week of the season and he also played with a toe injury sustained in the accident.Wachter had been receiving interest from Division I schools until the broken arm "caused them to back off," he said."I developed turf toe and a dislocation that required surgery recently," said Wachter, who walked into Wednesday's signing on crutches."He's a tough kid," Cathell said. "He endured a lot just to play football."It paid off Wednesday."I am very, very happy," Wachter said. "After the accident, I was afraid all was lost as far as my playing in college. I'm thrilled about this."Edinboro put together consecutive 9-3 Division II playoff seasons under coach Lou Tepper, who has been guiding the Fighting Scots for five years.Edinboro had won 11 games in three years prior to Tepper's arrival. He led the University of Illinois to two bowl games in five years as head coach there."I know that coaching staff well and that's a first-class program Josh is walking into," Cathell said.Wachter plans to major in physics and engineering.Butler center Nate Hartung - recruited by numerous Division 1 schools - is not signing. He will begin a two-year Mormon mission next fall.
