BUTLER TWP — Altmeyer’s Bed Bath Home store is celebrating 75 years in business this year.

While the first of those years weren’t in Butler County, the company’s presence here has been unwavering for decades.

Robert Altmeyer, the company president and the grandson of founder George Altmeyer, said he takes seriously the company’s legacy in the county.

“It’s kind of surreal that we’ve been around this long,” Altmeyer said. “It’s the legacy of my grandfather and father, and it’s really a great honor to carry it on.”

The company, which is headquartered in Delmont, Pa., traces its roots to New Kensington, where Altmeyer’s grandfather, George, opened his first store in the basement of a 10th Street bar with $5,000. But Altmeyer’s has been a Butler County mainstay for five decades.

Altmeyer’s opened its original Butler County location 50 years ago in 1966 at 134 S. Main St. In 1983, it moved to a larger location at 142 Main St.

In 1992, the store moved to Moraine Pointe Plaza, and in 2002 it moved to Point Plaza Shopping Center on New Castle Road.

In September 2015, the store moved a final time to a new location next to Rite Aid in the plaza.

That store is one of 11 Altmeyer’s locations, which Robert Altmeyer said stand out from the competition because of the company’s status as a privately owned specialty linen retailer. Altmeyer can only think of one other such store, and it’s in New England.

“We offer what national retailers cannot, a product tailered specifically to the Pittsburgh market,” Altmeyer said. “Pittsburgh people want style and quality home linens but they know value and do not overpay for things.”
