Evening pasture walk slated
Natural Resources Conservation Service in Butler County will be hosting an evening pasture walk at Steve Misera’s farm, 135 Minteer Road, from 6 to 8 p.m. July 31.
Misera has implemented a rotational grazing system as part of his organic operation and more recently began implementing adaptive grazing practices which include daily animal movements and tall grass grazing.
Misera has seen a dramatic improvement in his pastures since moving to more advanced grazing management and will highlight some of these improvements during the tour.
The walk also will include fence and water considerations along with lessons learned since implementing an NRCS grazing system.
NRCS staff will be on hand to highlight soil health improvements when moving to adaptive grazing management along with estimating dry matter and paddock sizes to meet daily forage needs.
Misera operates an organic crop farm that features a mix of corn, small grain and hay along with an increased use of cover crops and runs about 20 cow/calf Devon crosses on pasture.
The event is free, however, registration is required and can be done by contacting the NRCS office at 724-482-5298 by Friday.
Andy Gaver is a conservationist with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Butler County.
