Rockets girls shoot by Grove City, 70-50
GROVE CITY — Thursday night's regional girls basketball showdown between Slippery Rock High and Grove City High featured a clash of styles.
In the first half, both teams took turns playing the game at their pace.
The Eagles managed an 8-2 run over a 4½-minute span, with Sammi Bell's basket cutting GC's deficit to four points.
But sandwiched around the Eagles' spurt was a 10-0 run by the Rockets to start the game and a 19-4 outburst to close the first half, giving the visitors a 41-22 edge at the break.
Slippery Rock cultivated that advantage to take a 70-50 decision over the Eagles and to remain undefeated in the region.
The Rockets (12-1, 6-0) like to play a running game, and that was reflected in their scoring spurts.
The team made eight of its first 10 field goal attempts, then closed the first quarter in a 1-for-10 slump.
"When we were able to get into a half-court game, we stopped them," said Eagles coach T.L. Eller. "Instead of two easy points for them, it turned into two easy points for us."
"Sometimes, it's just a mentality," said Slippery Rock coach Adrienne Orris. "We've had a lot of fast starts this season because we come out ready to play and know what we have to do. But if the game slows down, our energy seems to go down as well.
"We have to find a way to maintain the same level of play," she added.
Slippery Rock's dominance in the final seven minutes of the first half was fed by eight Grove City turnovers.
Taylor Crocker drained a 3-pointer for Slippery Rock with 3:46 left before halftime, followed by a steal and basket by Sarah Cessar, pushing the Rockets' lead to 33-18.
Grove City (9-4, 3-3) had 25 turnovers in the game.
"We were able to do some good things against a bigger and faster team tonight, but turnovers really hurt us," Eller said.
Senior guard Caitlin McNamara led Grove City with 14 points.
The Rockets made 10 3-pointers and featured four players in double figures, led by Kourtney Rhoads' 19 points.
Karly Rhoads added 13, while Crocker and Cessar each scored 11.
