Glews still in PIAA hunt

On a cold and raw day at Toms Run in York, Mars girls golfers Marisa and Lauren Glew stayed within striking distance of the lead in the first round of the PIAA Golf Championships Monday.

Senior Marisa Glew fired a 79 and Lauren Glew an 80.

Emily Riddle of Elk County Catholic set the pace with a 74.

Marisa Glew birdied No. 8 and finished the front nine with a 37, just two strokes off the pace at the time. However, she struggled on the back nine, carding a 42.

Her sister did the opposite.

Lauren Glew, making her first appearance at the golf championships as a senior, shot a 42 on the front nine, but rallied with a 38 on the final nine holes to trail the leader by six strokes.

On the boys side, Grove City's Cameron Peterson shot a 77 and is tied for 16th.

Nathan Sutherland of Holy Name and Ben Wolfe of Westmont Hilltop are tied atop the leader board with a 1-under-par 70.

The final round will be held today.

When Scottie Herman scored with 10 minutes remaining in the match to tie the score at 1, he gave Knoch new life.That new life lasted 9 minutes and 30 seconds before Joel Gatnarek killed them again.The Riverside soccer player scored his second goal of the game with only 30 seconds remaining in the match to end Knoch's season with a 2-1 win in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs Monday.Gatnarek scored his first goal 15 minutes into the contest, and that lead held up until the Herman goal knotted the score.The Knights ended the season with a 11-7 record.<B>Chartiers Valley 1, Seneca Valley 0</B> — The Raiders outshot their opponent 11-6, but a goal by Joe Rileo with 10:18 remaining in the first half held up and sent Seneca Valley to a WPIAL Class AAA playoff loss.Pat Hamilton had six saves in goal for the Raiders (7-10-2).<B>Grove City 5, Wilmington 1</B> — Nico Hutchinson scored two goals and Jordan Nichols, Jake Muse and Gordon Craig closed out the scoring for the Eagles (13-2-2).Grove City will play SlipperyRock at SRU at 8 p.m. today to decide the region championship.<B>Slippery Rock 3, Hickory 0 — </B>Goaltender Abir Chatterjee recorded his eighth shutout of the season Monday for the Rockets (13-2).Michael Ramirez scored two goals and Michael Ramirez notched the other. Ryan Gercken and Wes Craig each had an assist.

Union rolled to a 25-9, 25-6, 25-10 win over Moniteau (3-10 overall, 3-12 in the KSAC).The Damsels also won the junior varsity match, 25-19, 25-23.<B>Cranberry 3, Karns City 1 </B>— The Gremlins claimed the first set 25-17, but lost the final three 25-11, 25-9, 25-18 to fall to 5-6.Courtney Slagle had 14 points, Stephanie Isaaco 11 points and Ashley Campbell 10 points for Karns City.The KC junior varsity team remained undefeated at 11-0 with a straight-sets win.
