Duquesne University honors Karns City's Isacco

KARNS CITY— Stephanie Isacco's sports resume is impressive enough.

Toss in her overall resume and she's off the charts.

The Karns City senior, a standout in volleyball and track and field for the Gremlins, also is ranked No. 1 in her class of 124, is president of the National Honor Society, does volunteer work for Katie's Kitchen in Butler and belongs to numerous clubs and organizations in school.

"I get home from everything (after school) around 8 p.m. or so — then I have to do my homework," Isacco said.

For all that she does, Isacco is one of seven recipients of Duquesne University's Mind, Heart and Spirit Award, which acknowledges and promotes outstanding student athletes from tri-state area high schools.

Isacco received two tickets to a Pittsburgh Steelers game — she took her father to the Tampa Bay game recently — and a Duquesne University watch as one of the nine recipients.

If she is the grand prize winner of the seven, Isacco will receive a $26,000 scholarship from Duquesne and on-field recognition by a member of the Steelers organization.

While at the Steelers-Tampa Bay game, her name and accomplishments were displayed on the video scoreboard at Heinz Field.

"Seeing that happen was pretty cool,"Isacco said. "It felt like my accomplishments in school were really being honored."

"This is a very difficult award to receive," saidDuquesne senior media relations manager Rose Ravasio. "Your school's administration has to nominate you, and the competition is very stiff.

"There are plenty of tremendous student athletes in the area who aren't even nominated because their schools figure they have no chance."

Even if Isacco wins the scholarship, there's no guarantee she will attend Duquesne. She is applying there, but already has won the $60,000 Vance Honors Scholarship from Westminster College.

She's applied to Ohio Northern and Dickinson College as well. She wants to major in political science and her long-range goals include going to law school.

"If I wind up at a smaller school, I'll probably play a sport,"Isacco said. "It will be volleyball or track, but I'll have to pick one."

She's pretty good at both.

Isacco was captain of the Gremlins' volleyball team this fall and helped the squad reach the District 9 playoffs. Karns City was 0-12 her freshman year and 3-13 her sophomore season. Her mother coaches the team.

Isacco has qualified for the District 9 track meet in four events — the 400 meters, 800 meters, 1,600 and 3,200 relays — and set the school record her sophomore year by running the 800 in 2 minutes, 27 seconds.

"I enjoy both sports,"Isacco said. "It would be a tough choice."

She's had tough choices before. Last spring, Isacco had to choose between competing in the District 9 meet and accompanying her fellow band members on that squad's spring trip to Boston.

She opted to do the track meet.

"It's hard because both are depending on you as part of a team,"Isacco said.

Besides volleyball, track and the National Honor Society, Isacco also belongs to the Math Club, French Club, Gifted Program, Students Against Destructive Decisions, concert choir, marching band, Drama Club, Percussion Ensemble and Peer Leadership.

These days, she practices for the school musical after school until 4:30 p.m., practices with the Percussion Ensemble until 6, then practices for her club volleyball team until 8.

Isacco also maintains a 4.1 grade-point average, teaches a fourth-grade Sunday School class and helps feed the unfortunate twice a month at Katie's Kitchen.

"I like being active and I have a lot of different interests,"Isacco said. "I don't know what I'd do if I wasn't busy all the time."

Isacco is the daughter of Andrew and Marcella Isacco of Karns City.
