Butler Matt Wetzel vs. Knoch bowling at Family Bowl-a-Way on Wednesday.

BUTLER TWP — MiKayla White and her Butler teammates continued pushing the proverbial bowling ball up the hill toward the postseason.

With a 7-0 win over Knoch Wednesday night at Family Bowlaway, the Golden Tornado girls moved past Mars into second place for the final playoff spot.

The Planets stopped Butler's 55-match section winning streak earlier this season.

The Golden Tornado have one section match left, against Seneca Valley next Wednesday.

“That's water under the bridge,” White said. “Our focus has been trying to make the spares, keep calm and focus on making the regionals as a team.”

The Golden Tornado's boys team also won 7-0.

The Butler girls, who are 7-2, knocked down 2,629 pins compared to the Knights 1,887.

White rolled a team-high series of 567, with Megan Paul coming in behind her with a 566. Paul rolled a team-best game of 210.

White feels her mental approach has helped carry her game.

“Keeping calm has helped me a lot,” White said. “Last year, I'd get frustrated with myself and get a little angry because I missed something or my ball didn't carry. Keeping calm has helped me a lot forgetting about the frames before.”

Chelsea Cimbala led the Knights with a 475 series and 223 game.

Matt Wetzel and the boys team had no such qualms. Butler won a tight match 2,907-2,613 in total pins and were trying to pick up its individual averages.

Wetzel wanted to see more of his teammates push forward to join him at regionals.

“I know we had some guys that needed some pins to get up there,” Wetzel said. “Every week as a team we're getting better and better. It makes me happy when we keep doing that, especially since we're getting hot at the end of the season.”

Golden Tornado coach Bob Cupp appreciates the breathing room.

Cupp plans to use some younger bowlers next week to see who will be picked as alternates for the postseason.

Wetzel and teammate Shawn Marcellus have already locked up regional spots for Butler (8-1).

“Everybody's picking each other up right now,” Cupp said. “They are bowling as a team and helping each other out. I like where they are right now heading into the league championships.”

Wetzel led the Golden Tornado boys with a 653 series. Nick Huff had the high game with a 240.

It took Wetzel awhile to figure out the shot.

“Usually, outside is decently dry,” Wetzel said. “Today one lane was different than the other, so you had to adjust and hope your shot didn't break down.”

Joel Zacherl — who has qualified for regionals — led the Knights with a 612 series and high game of 212.

Knoch kept the boys match tight, losing 2,907 to 2,613.

Knights coach Kevin Hindman also said he has several bowlers close to the cut-off line for regionals. Hindman has high hopes for his squad next week.

“I look to next week to be a good week for everybody,” Hindman said. “They should be able to come here, loosen up and have fun with the day.”
