SV controls Morgantown, 14-1

JACKSON TWP — A recent three-game losing streak did not sit well with Seneca Valley’s boys lacrosse team.

The Raiders wanted to distance themselves from the slump as much as they could.

The last two games will go a long way in doing that.

SV outlasted Pine-Richland 10-9 in triple overtime last Thursday before facing Morgantown Wednesday night at NexTier Stadium.

Marcus Rose paced a balanced scoring effort with four goals as the Raiders manhandled the Mohigans 14-1, evening SV’s record at 3-3.

The three consecutive losses came against North Allegheny, Hempfield (District 3) and Glenbrook North (Ill.) by a combined score of 26-12.

“It came down to communication,” said senior captain Hunter Holt. “We weren’t clicking and finishing shots. We meshed really well against Pine-Richland and it just carried over.”

Holt did his part to help SV get off to a fast start Wednesday, scoring the game’s first goal off an assist from Dan Rupert with less than four minutes gone from the first-quarter clock. Holt added an unassisted tally later in the period, after which the Raiders led 5-0.

“We did a good job of attacking a zone defense, which is something we struggled with earlier in the season,” said Raiders’ coach Lance Diamond.

But SV’s dominance wasn’t just apparent on the attack.

“Our goalie, Paul Cundiff, came up with some big saves early,” Holt said. “We cleared the ball and after that, we were able to keep possession in the offensive end for pretty much the rest of the game.”

The Raiders won 13 face-offs to just five for Morgantown. SV out-shot the Mohigans 36-10.

Mike Zoria and Will Moriarty both scored three times while Rupert added a pair of scores. Cain Brady contributed two assists.

“Our scoring was spread out, just like it was against Pine-Richland,” Diamond said. “That’s what we’re looking for.”

Cundiff made four saves before being relieved by Brady Moze in the fourth quarter. The latter made one stop.

J.D. Ironfield had eight saves for the Mohigans (5-2).

Morgantown avoided the shutout with Ethan Goldcamp’s goal with 4:12 left in the game.

Diamond is hoping his team can build on its effort from the last two games. The Raiders face Mount Lebanon on Friday.

“We just need to continue the effort every single day,” he said.
