Raiders manhandle North Hills in 14-1 win

Kayla Keil of Mars throws the shot put Monday in the Planets girls' 89-60 win over Shady Side Academy.

Gabe Grinder went 4-for-4 and drove in five runs and Cory Mazzoni went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI to power Seneca Valley to a 14-1, five-inning baseball victory over North Hills Monday.

Tyler Bream also had three hits to help make a winner of Shaine Patsilevas.

The win clinches at least a share of the Section 1-AAAA title for the Raiders.

In other games:

• D.J.Cannon drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning and picked up the win on the mound with eight strikeouts as Mars nipped Ambridge 3-2.

• Justin Bollinger gave up three runs in six innings in Freeport's 5-3 victory over Valley.

• Bob Revesz hit a pair of home runs and tallied six RBI as Grove City routed Meadville, 12-2 in five innings.

Butler's doubles duo of Matt Slamecka and Stefan Kemp were defeated in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA championship tournament Monday by Peters Township's Doug Subosits and P. Kennedy by a score of 10-5.Slamecka and Kemp were the only team at the WPIAL finals made up of two freshmen.

The Butler boys defeated Pine-Richland 101-26 to finish its second consecutive season with a 9-0 record.First-place winners were Matt Pribis (110 hurdles, 800), Darius Hightower (100, 200), Evan Gomez (1,600), Cody Hartman (400), Zach Dunkle (3,200), the 400 relay (Hightower, Jason Glasgow, Jon McAvoy, Jay Swiagart) and the 1,600 relay (Dave Hohn, Cole Baxter, Carlos Sanchez, Hartman).In the field events, winners were Brandon Taylor (long, high and triple jumps) and Glasgow (pole vault).• At the Mars Junior High Track and Field Invitational Saturday, Lexis Frost of Butler was named co-Field MVP for her performance, which included winning the girls long jump and placing second in the triple jump.Knoch's Jolene Kunkel won the 1,600 and 3,200 races while Seneca Valley's Kara Moyer won the 100 hurdles.In the boys meet, Butler's 1,600 and 3,200 relays placed first as did Seneca Valley's Jeff Hart in the pole vault.
