2 men suffer apparent heroin overdoses

Calls just hours apart in Butler

Two men suffered apparent heroin overdoses just hours apart Tuesday in Butler, authorities said.

Both men survived but it took three doses of Narcan, a nasal spray used to counter the effects of an opiate overdose, to revive one of them, according to city police.

Later, police filed misdemeanor drug charges against the suspects — Mike A. Cumblidge, 41, of Butler Township; and Vincent H. Strobel, 34, of Butler.

The first call came in about 2:30 p.m. at a home in the 300 block of Fairview Avenue. Officers found Cumblidge on the floor.

On a table near his prone body were six empty stamp bags and two full bags of suspected heroin as well as a used syringe, court documents said.

Cumblidge, police said, admitted he had used between five and six bags of heroin. A Butler Ambulance Service crew treated him before he was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Shortly after 8 p.m., police were called to an apartment in the 100 block of East Wayne Street for another suspected overdose.

When officers got there, Butler Ambulance medics were treating Strobel, who was found unresponsive in the bathroom, documents said.

They noticed six empty stamp bags of suspected heroin and a syringe on the toilet seat.

Police said rescuers had to give Strobel three doses of naloxone, a drug marketed as Narcan, before he became responsive and his breathing and vital signs improved.

He refused to be taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Cumblidge is charged with possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Strobel is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
