[naviga:h3]Students give concert[/naviga:h3]

Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School small ensembles will play in concert at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school auditorium.

The groups are made up of students from the junior and senior high schools.

[naviga:h3]Ice festival Friday, Saturday[/naviga:h3]

The fifth annual Carved in Ice Festival takes place Friday and Saturday in downtown Butler.

Events will be from 5 to 8 p.m. in Diamond Park on Friday, and Main Street will not be closed that evening.

In addition to ice sculptures, Friday evening will feature the Butler High School jazz band performing inside the Butler County Symphony Association office, adjacent to the park, with the music transmitted outside in the park.

This year, a second day has been added to the festival on Saturday, when hours will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and some roads will be closed.

Saturday’s activities will include a chili cook-off, music, scavenger hunt, balloon artist, face painters, a basket auction and a 50/50 drawing.

Admission is free both days.

[naviga:h3]‘Spelling Bee’ staged at SRU[/naviga:h3]

“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” will be staged by Slippery Rock University theatre students in the University Union on campus.

Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 and 29 and March 3 to 5 and at 2 p.m. March 1.

Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book of a Musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” features a group of six eccentric teens and tweens, who yearn for the spelling bee championship of a lifetime.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for SRU students with ID.

Tickets are available at www.sru.edu/tickets or at the Robert M. Smith Student Center Information Desk.

An hour before each performance, tickets are only available through the University Union box office.

Due to adult language and subject matter, this production is recommended for mature audiences age 13 or older.

[naviga:h3]String quartet opens season[/naviga:h3]

Allegheny RiverStone Center for the Arts will host the Clarion String Quartet for the first performance of the 15th season.

The music will begin at 2 p.m. March 1 in Lincoln Hall, 42 S. Palmer St., Foxburg.

A Meet the Artists cake and coffee reception will follow the performance.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $5 for students.

[naviga:h3]Hikes slated Saturday [/naviga:h3]

The annual Cherry Pie Hike and Washington’s Trail Hike on part of the North Country Trail will run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, Brady Township.

The activities commemorate George Washington’s birthday and the Virginia Colony mission demanding French withdrawal from British territory that precipitated the French and Indian/Seven Years War.

Choose from several hikes and walks with circa 1753 re-enactors and state park staff, and enjoy a taste of cherry pie.

A $3 per person donation is encouraged for participation in the guided hikes/walks. Reservations are required for hikes and nature walks by Thursday.

[naviga:h3]Flute concert planned[/naviga:h3]

Fifteen Slippery Rock University Flute Studio students will be taking the stage with a group of junior and senior high school students when the SRU Music Department hosts the sixth annual Honors Flute Ensemble concert at 7 p.m., Sunday at Swope Music Hall.

Music selections for the performance include both classical and modern pieces, such as “The Greatest Showman” and “Don’t Stop Believing.”

Pieces that will be premiering at the concert include “The Lovely, the Dreamers, the She,” a commissioned piece by Clint Bleil, a Pittsburgh-area jazz composer, arranger and saxophonist, and a piece written for tenor and flute ensembles by Todd Goodman, a music teacher at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School.

Admission is $5 for the general public and $3 for students.

Works by several Mars Area High School students were selected for the 2020 Pittsburgh Arts Region Scholastic Art Exhibit, on display through Saturday at Community College of Allegheny County — North Campus.

The students are seniors Mina Beach, Delaney Maitland, Rebecca Neiser and Nicole Newtzie; juniors Kendall Ceh, Caroline Dunn, Isabel Mannella and Aspen Wilson; sophomore Audrey Gehm; and freshmen Kaitlyn Ames and Effie Frank.

The exhibit features artwork by high school students from throughout the Pittsburgh region.

All Scholastic Art Award winners will be recognized during a ceremony on Saturday at CCAC — North Campus, and all honorable mention, Silver Key, Gold Key and special award winners will be announced at the ceremony.

[naviga:h3]Symphony salutes Fiedler[/naviga:h3]

The Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s 2019-20 season will perform a concert called “Arthur Fiedler’s Pops” March 7.

Selections will include “1812 Overture,” “Light Cavalry Overture,” “The Typewriter,” and a Beatles medley.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium.
