Maureen McGovern closes out Performing Arts Series season at SRU

Music superstar Maureen McGovern will perform March 21 at Slippery Rock University to close out the 2019-20 Performing Arts Series.

McGovern’s show, titled “The Long and Winding Road,” will also feature the 50 members of the SRU choir, under the direction of Stephen Barr, as they accompany McGovern in two numbers.

McGovern’s performance will feature songs by Paul Simon, Carole King, James Taylor, Lennon/McCartney, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and other singer/songwriters who helped shape the music loved by generations of audiences.

McGovern first came to fame with her Oscar-winning hit song “The Morning After” from “The Poseidon Adventure,” which earned her first Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Her solo album “The Pleasure of His Company,” with jazz pianist Mike Renzi, earned a second Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal. She was also a featured guest artist on the Grammy Award-winning “Songs from the Neighborhood: The Music of Mister Rogers.”

Other hits include “Can You Read My Mind” from “Superman,” the Oscar-winning “We May Never Love Like This Again” from “The Towering Inferno,” and “Different Worlds” from the TV series “Angie.”

Her Broadway credits include “The Pirates of Penzance,” “Three Penny Opera” with Sting, and “Little Women,” among others.

Her current release is “You Raise Me Up — A Spiritual Journey.”
